Charge controllers

Charge controllers regulate the voltage and current coming from the solar panels going to the battery. The output of the solar panels during the day must be roughly equivalent to the energy discharged from the batteries.

Charge controllers are rated by the amount of amperage they can process from a solar array which typically is 5, 10, 20 or 30 A.  Yandalux has a range of different charge controllers available for purchase.

Batteries

Solar panels generate electricity when the sun shines, however they do not store energy. The battery is at the heart of the autonomous solar system and as such must be selected with great care and properly dimensioned to ensure reliable overall performance. It is worth to invest in batteries of higher quality even if they cost a bit more. Automotive starter batteries are not suitable for deep charging and in a solar home system will only last for a few months at best.

Industrial forklift batteries

  • Recommended for their longevity and resistance to abuse, but very high initial cost
  • Life expectancy: 15 - 25+ years
  • Found mostly in telecommunications applications

Deep-cycle solar batteries

  • The most common choice for remote power systems
  • Life expectancy: 5 - 6 years if maintained properly
  • Given proper air circulation and regular water level checks, the battery will last 2 - 6 years

Gel (captive electrolyte) batteries

  • Non-liquid (gel) electrolyte is used to eliminate the problems of water loss through gassing
  • Maintenance free; no spilling or corrosive gas production
  • Very suitable for solar home systems in the tropics due to high heat resistance
  • Life expectancy: at least 3 - 5 years
